How it treats your list

  • Nothing is ever sent

    The mailbox check stops at RCPT TO, the step a mail server performs before accepting a message. No email is transmitted.

  • Deterministic, no guessing

    Every verdict comes from rules, not AI: the same input always gives the same result, with a reason and a score.

  • Uncertain stays uncertain

    A result that cannot be confirmed is never reported as Valid or Invalid. It is Unknown or Needs review, and says why.

Five checks, in order

An address stops at the first check that settles it: a bad format or a missing domain never reaches the mail server.

  1. Step 1

    Hygiene

    Trims, lowercases and converts international domains (punycode), then merges duplicates.

  2. Step 2

    Syntax

    Checks the address format against RFC 5321 and 5322 (a practical subset).

  3. Step 3

    Risk lists

    Flags disposable domains, role accounts (such as info@) and free providers, and suggests fixes for likely typos.

  4. Step 4

    DNS

    Confirms the domain exists and accepts mail: MX records, A/AAAA fallback and null MX (RFC 7505). The app queries public nameservers itself.

  5. Step 5

    SMTP

    Asks the mail server whether the mailbox exists with a single RCPT TO probe over STARTTLS, with catch-all detection, greylist retries and MX fallback. Paid plans only.

How each check works

Four statuses, no ambiguity

Every address ends in exactly one of these, with a reason in plain words.

  • Valid

    A mail server confirmed the mailbox exists. Only the SMTP check can say this.

  • Needs review

    May work but is not guaranteed, and each result says why: Catch-All, Disposable, Role-Based, Greylisted, or Not Checked (Free plan: format and domain are fine, the mailbox was not checked).

  • Unknown

    Could not be checked: a timeout, the mail server blocked or throttled the check, or the probe server was unreachable. Try again later.

  • Invalid

    Confirmed bad: wrong format, the domain does not exist or accepts no mail, or the mail server said the mailbox does not exist.
